Deschamps’ Dash, like most fundraisers, was organized to help rally around a friend. On November 3rd, 2011, my best friend Mark Deschamps (Daish) was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. As you can read in more detail in the Mark’s Journey, all of his family and friends were in complete disbelief. I think we were caught in the stigma that Lung Cancer seems to carry with it. He’s young! He doesn’t smoke! He just ran his best 5K race a month before being diagnosed! We quickly came to realize that lung cancer does not discriminate.
We have many goals at Deschamps’ Dash. As our motto above says, we want to RAISE AWARENESS around just how many people are affected by Lung Cancer. LIFT STIGMAS associated to Lung Cancer in that it affects so many and not simply people who are older or might smoke. By raising awareness and lifting the stigmas associated to Lung Cancer, we hope to eventually INCREASE FUNDING to help support the support the individuals affected by lung cancer and the organizations help to support them. In the end, our bottom goal is SAVE LIVES and change outcomes.
Please note that as of 2018, money raised at our annual Bowling to Strikeout Cancer event will be evenly split between Lung Cancer Canada and a Trust Fund and Registered Education Savings Program for Mark’s daughter’s Avery and Brooke.
I still find that I have to justify my husband's disease to others. He was healthy, athletic, and never smoked.- Natalie Deschamps
